Who can benefit from our cosmetic dentistry treatments?

Imperfections in teeth can affect your self-confidence. Depending on the issue, they could also potentially put your oral health at risk.

Teeth that are damaged, worn or misshapen can lead to an uneven bite, which can make it more difficult to eat and put pressure on the jaw joints. Crooked or protruding teeth can be at greater risk of injury, and any untreated damage to teeth can put you at risk of infection.

If you're considering cosmetic dentistry for aesthetic or functional reasons, book a consultation with our North Shore dentists to find out what your treatment options are. We'll listen to your concerns and give you a complete oral health assessment so we can develop your personalised treatment plan.

Types of cosmetic dental treatments

Our experienced cosmetic dentists in Chatswood and Northbridge offer the following services, depending on your oral health needs and preferences for changing your smile.

Read more information about each of these services below to help you make an informed decision about your dental treatment. More than one treatment may be combined as part of a complete smile makeover.

Sailors Bay Dentistry uses CEREC technology to produce custom crowns, veneers and other restorations during a single visit to the dentist, to help save you time and make dental care more convenient.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments

Teeth whitening

Are your teeth yellow, stained or discoloured? Depending on the type of discolouration, you may be able to brighten your teeth by a number of shades with a teeth bleaching treatment. These are provided at our Northbridge dental clinic or in your own home.

Teeth whitening

Professional whitening can be done in a single visit. Our dentists apply a stronger concentration of bleaching agent and use a specialised bright light to whiten teeth.

Home teeth whitening takes 1 to 2 weeks to achieve your desired results. We'll provide you with custom mouth trays and bleaching gel that should be applied daily following your dentist's instructions.

When used correctly, teeth whitening treatments have minimal risks, which may include teeth feeling more sensitive temporarily. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) doesn't recommend the use of over-the-counter whitening products, as these increase the risk of chemical burns to the gums and can produce disappointing results compared to a personalised treatment.

Teeth bleaching can't cover up all types of discolouration. We can discuss other options to help you whiten your smile, such as veneers, crowns or replacing old fillings.

Dental veneers

Veneers are bonded to teeth to improve their appearance. This versatile treatment can cover up discoloured, damaged or misshapen teeth, straighten slightly crooked teeth and close gaps in your smile. We offer dental veneers made from porcelain (ceramic) and composite resin.

  • Porcelain veneers cost more, but they look and feel more like natural tooth enamel and are more durable.
  • Composite veneers are more affordable than porcelain, but they can stain and damage more easily.

To prepare your teeth for veneers, a small layer of the surface (around 0.5mm) first has to be removed. This can sometimes cause teeth to feel more sensitive to temperature. We'll make sure you understand the possible risks before you agree to any treatment.

Dental crowns

Crowns can strengthen, repair, resize or reshape teeth. Often used to rebuild teeth that have been chipped or worn down, crowns can also be placed over a weakened tooth to offer extra protection or they may be used to modify the appearance and function of one or more teeth.

Using CEREC technology, our Northbridge dentists can design and manufacture a custom crown during a single visit. We'll match the colour of your ceramic crown to the rest of your teeth to leave you with a natural-looking smile.

Porcelain crowns have similar strength to natural tooth enamel and can last for many years when you follow good oral health. Decay or cavities affecting the underlying tooth can cause a crown to come loose.

Dental bridges

A bridge can replace one or more missing teeth. Gaps in your smile are more than just an aesthetic concern, as the gap can trap food and bacteria, increasing your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Teeth on either side may also lean into the gap over time and become crooked.

Most bridges require crowns to be placed over the adjacent teeth for support, while others may be supported by metal clasps. This depends on the type of teeth that need to be replaced.

Dental bridges

Dental implants

An implant replaces a whole tooth, including the root. This means it supports the growth of new bone tissue in the jaw, which isn't the case for a bridge or dentures. This can prevent the jaw from shrinking.

Dental implants are surgically placed in the jaw and covered by a natural-looking crown. You may not be a candidate for implant surgery if your jaw isn't large enough or you have certain health conditions. A dental bridge is sometimes a better option than an implant, depending on a number of factors. These will be discussed with you during your consultation to know what option is best for you.

Amalgam removal

Do you want to replace old metal fillings? If you have 'silver' fillings, our cosmetic dentists in North Shore can remove the old filling and replace it with a new tooth-coloured 'white' filling, leaving you with a more natural-looking smile.

Metal amalgam fillings contain a small amount of mercury that can be toxic if ingested, so it's important that amalgam filling removal is provided by a qualified professional. At Sailors Bay Dentistry, our dentists are experienced in safe amalgam removal and responsible disposal.

Braces and Invisalign® treatment

Do you have crooked or misaligned teeth? Orthodontic treatment can bring the teeth and jaws properly into alignment, to help straighten your smile and lower your oral health risks.

Braces and Invisalign® treatment

We offer two orthodontic treatment options at our Northbridge dental clinic:

  • Conventional braces are designed to be unobtrusive and may be the only option to correct a more severe orthodontic problem.
  • Invisalign® aligners are made of clear plastic and fit over the teeth like a mouthguard, for a more discreet alternative to braces.
  • Lingual braces that fit on the inner surface of the teeth and are not visible when smiling.

If you're considering orthodontics for yourself or your child, book a consultation with our Northbridge orthodontic specialists. Dr Ross Adams is available for brace consultations and fittings on Wednesdays and Fridays.

We'll assess your suitability and explain the pros and cons of each treatment so you can decide whether orthodontics is the right choice for you.

What does cosmetic dentistry cost?

Cosmetic dentistry prices depend on the type of treatment, how many teeth are being treated and other factors. We can give you a quote during your consultation, so you'll have an idea of what to expect. We also offer flexible payment plans to help make the cost more affordable.

The cost of cosmetic dentistry is not usually covered by health insurance if its purpose is entirely aesthetic. However, you should be able to make a claim for treatments that also have oral health benefits, such as crowns or fillings. Orthodontics is also not covered by most health funds.

Cosmetic Dentistry FAQ

Cosmetic dentistry is the branch of dentistry concerned with improving the appearance of smiles and other aesthetic issues related to the mouth.

Our North Sydney cosmetic dentist offers a range of treatments including:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Porcelain veneers
  • Dental crowns
  • Dental bridges
  • Dental implants
  • Amalgam removal
  • Braces and Invisalign treatment

Teeth whitening is by far the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure in Australia. Teeth whitening can be completed in a single appointment with your dentist, or over 1 to 2 weeks using a take-home kit. Porcelain veneers are also popular as a more permanent alternative to teeth whitening.

Cosmetic dentistry prices depend on what type of treatment you choose and how long the procedure takes, among other factors. Your North Shore cosmetic dentist can give you an idea of costs during your consultation so you know what to expect, as well as discussing the payment options we offer at our clinic.

Procedures such as teeth whitening and veneers that are strictly cosmetic depends on your level of coverage in Australia. Your health fund may cover treatments such as crowns and bridges that also have a functional benefit. Your Sydney cosmetic dentist can help you to find out if you're covered.

The most expensive procedures are larger-scale treatments such as replacing all of your teeth with implants or a smile makeover involving multiple treatments. If you're worried about cosmetic dentistry prices, our flexible payment plans can help you to spread the cost over a number of instalments.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks, but you can lower the risks of cosmetic treatments by choosing a reputable dental clinic.

Australian cosmetic dentistry is strictly regulated and only a suitably qualified professional can provide services such as in-chair teeth whitening and dental veneers. Home teeth whitening should follow the guidance of your cosmetic dentist.

Cosmetic dentistry may be chosen for purely aesthetic reasons (improving the look of your smile) or it can also have functional benefits. Treatments that repair, replace or straighten teeth can make it easier to eat and to brush, helping to improve oral health and general health.

Cosmetic dentists help patients to feel more positive about their appearance, which can reduce stress and anxiety and improve their wellbeing. Your dentist will make sure you understand the possible risks of treatments and help you to set realistic expectations so you can decide if cosmetic dentistry is right for you.
