TMJ Treatment

Stiff neck, ear ache, worn teeth, back pain, grinding your teeth, suffering from frequent headaches or popping jaw joints? It is possible you are one of the numerous TMJ Dysfunction sufferers who remain undiagnosed. TMJ dysfunction is a very common problem that can unfortunately remain undiagnosed for long periods of time. The TMJ (temporo mandibular joint) is your jaws joint attaching the lower jaw (mandible) to your skull. It is the most frequently used joint in your body and facilitates many of our most basic functions, used repeatedly for opening and closing the mouth, chewing, swallowing, yawning, breathing, talking and coughing. A dysfunction of the TMJ causes disruption to these basic functions and can be a large contributor to pain, discomfort and fatigue which all impact on your quality of life. Treatment of TMJ comes in a variety of forms. Firstly, the problem must be correctly diagnosed and the source of pain established. A tailored treatment can then be planned for your particular needs. Treatment can be as simple as:

  • Home care for a short period
  • Use of anti-inflammatory agents
  • Splints (several types available)
  • Equilibration of the teeth
  • Long term stabilisation with a combination of the above

TMJ dysfunction can be very debilitating to your well being. If you suffer from any of the above symptoms or would like more information , why not schedule an appointment to explore the issue.
